Plenty of kids dream about being famous. But being famous doesn’t mean you’ll change history. Fame also doesn’t always bring happiness or riches. Lots of people are famous for fifteen minutes, but unless they do or make something that touches people’s hearts or changes their lives, their fame doesn’t last. The kids in this chapter used their talents to change the way people thought about what it means to be famous.

THE KID WHO KNEW WHAT HE WANTED

Three-year-old Yehudi leaned forward in his seat and tilted his blond head to one side, listening intently. He always sat quietly between his parents when they visited the theatre to hear the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra perform. That night, a famous violinist named Louis Persinger played a beautiful solo.

It was a regular Saturday event for the Menuhin family, and Yehudi loved it – sitting high up in the darkened gallery. He closed his eyes and imagined he was flying with the music.

Afterwards, Yehudi asked the same question he asked after every concert.

‘Could I have a violin, please Mama, please Papa?’

‘One day, Yehudi,’ replied his mother.

Yehudi’s parents were having trouble finding enough money to pay the rent and, besides, Yehudi was so tiny. There was plenty of time, if only the small boy would be patient. But Yehudi couldn’t wait.
